Extinction in a self-regulating population with demographic and environmental noise

چکیده
Models of population dynamics have been the subject of much study in biology. The essay of Malthus (1798) rst suggested exponential growth. The idea of quantitative limits on growth is usually attributed to Verhulst (1838), who pioneered the use of the logistic equation (LE), and to Lotka (1920) and Volterra (1926), who considered models of predators and prey. Typically these early studies of population dynamics regards the units of interest as the number of individuals in populations of one or more species, without regard to genetic diversity within a population.

Poor environmental tracking can make extinction risk insensitive to the colour of environmental noise.
The relative importance of environmental colour for extinction risk compared with other aspects of environmental noise (mean and interannual variability) is poorly understood. Such knowledge is currently relevant, as climate change can cause the mean, variability and temporal autocorrelation of environmental variables to change. Here, we predict that the extinction risk of a shorebird populatio...
متن کاملImpact of Colored Environmental Noise on the Extinction of a Long-Lived Stochastic Population: Role of the Allee Effect
We study the combined impact of a colored environmental noise and demographic noise on the extinction risk of a long-lived and well-mixed isolated stochastic population which exhibits the Allee effect. The environmental noise modulates the population birth and death rates. Assuming that the Allee effect is strong, and the environmental noise is positively correlated and Gaussian, we derive a Fo...
متن کاملLife-history models of extinction: a test with island spiders.
This study analyzes extinction patterns for two species of orb spiders monitored annually on 77 islands over a continuous 20-yr period. One species, Argiope argentata, has large populations sometimes crashing quickly to extinction and a much weaker relation of extinction likelihood to population size than does the other species, Metepeira datona. Demographic models were built for both species a...
متن کاملStochastic models of population extinction.
Theoretical ecologists have long sought to understand how the persistence of populations depends on biotic and abiotic factors. Classical work showed that demographic stochasticity causes the mean time to extinction to increase exponentially with population size, whereas variation in environmental conditions can lead to a power-law scaling. Recent work has focused especially on the influence of...
متن کاملThe Investigation on the Relations between Epistemological Beliefs and Self-Regulating Learning Strategies among Students in North Khorasan University of Medical Sciences in 2017
Introduction: Poor epistemological beliefs are among the reasons which will lead a person to tiredness, lack of motivation and distrust to personal abilities. This is usually resulted from the fact that individuals with such beliefs image the knowledge as unrelated and confusing elements which surrounded by references and they will never try for learning it. In the recent years, there are high ...
